Review of MORTAL KOMBAT II SPECIAL

During the heyday of the popularity of "Mortal", as it was then briefly called, sixteen-bit games were an unaffordable luxury, for which people went to the box office, mainly in order to "chop up" the third and second parts of the fighting game (in that order). Although eight-bit games have already gained some popularity, there were no fighting games that could even approximate the satisfaction of players who were hooked on Mortal Kombat. Let's not be offended by Street Fighter fans, but let's leave their favorite franchise to them, and the average player wanted to play his favorite bruiser with familiar characters and techniques. For a number of licensing and economic reasons, these dreams were not allowed to come true, but it was not the first time that the half-baked Taiwanese company JWAI Campaign went against the flow and released several games illegally developed by fellow countrymen from Hammer Team. These were unofficial ports of the Mortal Kombat fighting game series for eight-bit consoles. The most popular game, as far as it was possible then, was the one that repeated "Mortal Kombat II". It had almost the same name, except for the prefix "Special".

The owners of Sega, as well as those who did not even have eight-bit cards, did not hide their disdain for the game. In the end, it is clear that an unofficial game on a much weaker game system could not reproduce everything that the original Mortal was loved for, but the Taiwanese managed to squeeze out the necessary minimum. The owners of NES-Dandy got the opportunity to play as familiar characters in a relatively familiar environment. The developers also recreated three techniques for each fighter, copying them from the original, although techniques with the same combinations for all heroes were activated. The iconic fate for the series, of course, remained on 16-bit, which at that time was perceived as the main drawback and a reminder of the failure of the previous generation of consoles. But the technical imperfection didn't hurt. Perhaps the local Rivne market is not representative in this regard, but a licensed Mortal cartridge cost about $ 20, and this is a significant amount in the early nineties in the province. But it was one of the most expensive games on its console, which was in high demand.

Gameplay

Unlike the official prototype, the pirate creation immediately offered to play as 14 characters, in addition to the basic 12 heroes, bosses were available - Shao Kahn and Kintaro, who for some reason was named Goro. The basic gameplay was as simple as possible, the player could move back and forth, bounce, squat, punch, kick, and block. In addition to the basic movements, each character had special techniques, mostly stripped from the original game. The special devices were practically not reset, so it was possible to use them until the finger slipped. Taking these features into account, the battle in the "Special Mortal" was dynamic and fast.

By analogy with the original, in order to complete the game, the gamer was required to win a series of duels, which ended in a duel with the main boss, Shao Kahn. The main advice to the player is one thing - do not let the opponent come to his senses and hit with super techniques for a long time.

conclusions

I won't be a prude, for all the informality of the product, its existence has given a lot of joy to the owners of the eight-bit, especially to all those who did not have the opportunity to purchase a more expensive console. Under these conditions, they wanted something at least approximately similar to a popular game, and Hammer Team embodied these expectations in a cartridge.

Positive:

+ "Mortal Kombat" is for those whom the publishers decided to deprive of this game, and the pirates "corrected" the injustice.

Minuses:

- numerous glitches.
- lack of fatality.
- identical keyboard shortcuts.
- the techniques of some fighters are reproduced incorrectly.
- grammatical errors.

estimation

Unfortunately, the pirated status left the developers with a certain carte blanche in the form of a lack of potential complaints about the quality of the game, but it's a pity, a little bit of QA refinement and there would have been a better fighting game on the NES.
